Children of Yesterday: The 24th Infantry Division in the Philippines, authored by Jan Valtin (the pseudonym of Richard Krebs) and published in 1946, is an anecdotal history of the U.S. Army's 24th Infantry Division during its deployment to the Philippines in 1944–45. The Division took part in fierce fighting on Mindanao, Leyte, Mindoro, Luzon, and Corregidor. Children of Yesterday portrays the horrors of the often close-quarters combat in graphic detail, while also accurately portraying the bravery and comraderie of American troops, and remains one of the best accounts of the war in the Pacific from the perspective of the front-line infantryman.

Children's palliative care has developed rapidly as a discipline, as health care professionals recognise that the principles of adult palliative care may not always be applicable to children at the end of life. The unique needs of dying children are particularly evident across Africa, where the scale of the problem is overwhelming and the figures so enormous that they are barely comprehensible. Written by a group with wide experience of caring for dying childrenin Africa, this book provides practical, realistic guidance on improving access to, and delivery of, palliative care in this demanding setting. It looks at the themes common to palliative care - including communication, assessment, symptom management, psychosocial issues, ethical dilemmas, end of lifecare, and tips for the professional on compassion and conservation of energy - but always retains the focus on the particular needs of the health care professional in Africa. Whilst containing some theory, the emphasis is on practical action throughout. It will provide health care professonals working in Africa, and other resource-poor settings, with the confidence, knowledge, and capacity to improve care for the terminally ill child in constrained and demanding environments.

For at least half of the twentieth century, psychology and the other mental health professions all but ignored the significant adaptive pos sibilities of the human gift of imagery. Our capacity seemingly to duplicate sights, sounds, and other sensory experiences through some form of central brain process continues to remain a mysterious, alma st miraculous skill. Because imagery is so much a private experience, experimental psychologists found it hard to measure and turned their attentian to observable behaviors that could easily be studied in ani maIs as well as in humans. Psychoanalysts and others working with the emotionally disturbed continued to take imagery informatian se riously in the form of dream reports, transferenee fantasies, and as indications of hallucinations or delusions. On the whole, however, they emphasized the maladaptive aspects of the phenomena, the dis tortions and defensiveness or the "regressive" qualities of daydreams and sequences of images. The present volume grows out of a long series of investigations by the senior author that have suggested that daydreaming and the stream of consciousness are not simply manifestations in adult life of persist ing phenomena of childhood. Rather, the data suggest that imagery sequences represent a major system of encoding and transforming information, a basic human capacity that is inevitably part of the brain's storage process and one that has enormous potential for adap tive utility. A companian volume, The Stream of Consciousness, edited by Kenneth S. Pope and Jerome L.
