This housing construction design manual documents and analyzes some 130 international residential structures from the last fifty years. From the standardized floor plans of the 1960s to the more individual concepts of the 1980s and the changed requirements and housing types of recent years, example structures by famous and lesser known architects from throughout the world showcase the tremendous variety of possible designs. The categorization of projects from a town planning perspective is supplemented by the detailed typological description of the relevant housing types. Every project is presented with its typical floor plans to a scale of 1:200; sections, site plans, and photographs illuminate each building’s structure and situation. In addition to incorporating some forty new projects, this new edition now contains figure-ground diagrams that highlight the most salient features of the floor plans, making them even easier to compare.

The Elbphilharmonie is Hamburg's new landmark and is already an icon of contemporary architecture. In this book, Herzog & de Meuron document their project: extensive archive material, plans, and photographs are used to illustrate the process of the creation of this once-in-a-hundred-years building from the first sketch and the various design stages with their many challenges, through to completion of the finished building. The dialog between historical brick plinth and contemporary glass crystal, the combination of different functions, the development of the spectacular large concert hall, the design of a public plaza for the population are just some of the many aspects that contribute to the attractiveness of the building.

"There can be no lovelier work that is simultaneously a symbol of the beginning of a new century than the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein. Precisely since nearly every executive body in our country was involved in the realization of this work, it represents a unique symbol of and monument to unity, conciliation, and hope. From a political and cultural-political point of view, museums are of absolute necessity to a country. They lend identity and give out positive energy. From my whole heart I wish that the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein will become a place for meeting and remeeting; a place of identification with works of art and cultural values; a place for people from far and wide to make acquaintance and exchange experience; a place of reference, of comparison, of differentiation; a place of culture, education, and the cultivated association with each other." "In its fascinating facade, the art museum mirrors not only the buildings that surround it. It is also a symbol of Liechtenstein's history and a mirror of Liechtenstein's present. Simultaneously, it embodies the age and the youth of this country. The country is old and possesses great treasures and values from an era when Liechtenstein was still bitterly poor. The art museum and the history of its development symbolize the success and recognition of Liechtenstein's economic circles which have led the country to monetary success. As art patrons they leave a cultural program for the generations of the coming century. Exhibition exponents will cover the works of old masters and contemporary artists. The collections of the Princes of Liechtenstein are reminiscent of the historic relationship between country and dynasty 300 years ago and the birth of a country defined as a constitutional hereditary monarchy on a democratic and parliamentary basis. The young national collection bears witness to the increasing effort undertaken to document the place of culture and art in the country's understanding of itself."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Brilliant buildings Louis Isadore Kahn and a luminous modernist language Louis Isadore Kahn (1901-1974) treated each building like a temple. Across the United States, in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Israel, his designs combined the sleek, utilitarian surfaces of modernism with a devotion to geometric forms and a reverence for natural light that suffused his structures with a monumental and breathtaking spirituality. Kahn was born in Estonia in 1901 but emigrated with his family to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1906. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Fine Arts in 1924 and worked in different architecture offices before setting up his own atelier in 1934. Kahn devoted much time to the study of contemporary architecture and housing, blossoming with his own unique style in the last two decades of his life. His language combined the vocabulary of the International Style with a "back to basics" grammar inspired by his visits to ancient sites in Italy, Greece, and Egypt. Above all, Kahn believed ardently in the interplay of light between mass and void. His masterworks, such as the National Assembly Building in Dhaka, Bangladesh, or Kimbell Art Museum in Forth Worth, Texas, exude their weight, their materials, and construction, but are pierced with such spotlights of sunshine, bathed in such natural light luminescence, as to acquire something celestial within their mass. This essential introduction brings together 17 of Kahn's most important buildings across his cultural, governmental, religious, and residential repertoire. Plans, views, descriptions, and quality photographs trace the context and development of each project, while an introductory essay explores Kahn's unique architectural ideology and his legacy as one of the most important 20th-century American architects since Frank Lloyd Wright.

After two successive thematic issues, Log 38 (Fall 2016) returns to its classic open form, bringing together myriad perspectives from architecture¿s center and periphery. Cynthia Davidson¿s expansive interview with New York architect Harry Cobb, of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, illuminates Cobb¿s 60-plus years in practice, as well as the history of modernism in America. Eve Blau explores the contexts that drove the 1968 Learning from Las Vegas studio at Yale, and Pier Vittorio Aureli and Maria Shéhérazade Giudici reevaluate the archaeological roots of modern domestic space. Log 38 also features critical perspectives on the current moment in architecture, with reviews of OMA¿s Fondaco dei Tedeschi, reflections on this year¿s Venice Architecture Biennale, and reactions to Brexit from architects and educators affected by the vote, and even includes an imaginative look at the work of Sam Jacob Studio from 20 years in the future.

Christ & Gantenbein belong to the youngest generation in a long succession of internationally eminent Swiss architects. The publication is not a monographic description of their work but demonstrates how Emanuel Christ (*1970 in Basel) and Christoph Gantenbein (*1971 in St.Gallen) design architecture. Based on the documentation of two very different projects--the VoltaMitte Housing and Commercial Building in Basel and the Swiss Church in London--the book elucidates the architects' distinct approach. In an interview with Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein, they discuss their design method and the design process. A richly illustrated essay throws light on the meaning and intention of their architectural oeuvre, beginning with their head-turning competition entry for the extension to the Swiss National Museum in Zurich to their most recent projects.
