The Globus Toolkit is a key technology in Grid Computing, the exciting new computing paradigm that allows users to share processing power, data, storage, and other computing resources across institutional and geographic boundaries. Globus Toolkit 4: Programming Java Services provides an introduction to the latest version of this widely acclaimed toolkit. Based on the popular web-based The Globus Toolkit 4 Programmer's Tutorial, this book far surpasses that document, providing greater detail, quick reference appendices, and many additional examples. If you’re making the leap into Grid Computing using the Globus Toolkit, you’ll want Globus Toolkit 4: Programming Java Services at your side as you take your first steps. Written for newcomers to Globus Toolkit, but filled with useful information for experienced users. Clearly situates Globus application development within the context of Web Services and evolving Grid standards. Provides detailed coverage of Web Services programming with the Globus Toolkit's Java WS Core component. Covers basic aspects of developing secure services using the Grid Security Infrastructure (GSI). Uses simple, didactic examples throughout the book, but also includes a more elaborate example, the FileBuy application, that showcases common design patterns found in Globus applications. Concludes with useful reference appendices.

The Transparent Becoming of World undertakes a penetrating inquiry into the quotidian world we take for granted and the brain that silently hoists our bubbles of world-thrownness. After critiquing the traditional views of direct realism, indirect realism and idealism, the continual becoming of world is explained by a novel integration of process dynamics, as formulated by Whitehead, Heidegger and Bohm, with the burgeoning field of quantum neurophilosophy. A rich ontological duality newly opened by quantum brain theory is exploited: the “between-two” of dual quantum modes. Existence as world-thrownness is between-two in waking and dreaming alike. This highly original interdisciplinary book may be of interest to philosophers, psychologists, neuroscientists, consciousness researchers, indeed anyone attracted to the enigma of their own lived existence. Dysphagia should be identified and the patient referred for further investigations without delay. Dysphagia should be differentiated from the feeling of a lump in the pharyngeal region (globus sensation). If globus sensation is suspected the possibility of an organic disorder must be excluded. Dysphagia is uncommon in comparison with other upper abdominal symptoms. Dysphagia may also be a manifestation of a neurological condition, which usually would also have other symptoms.

This interdisciplinary work discloses an unexpected coherence between recent concepts in brain science and postmodern thought. A nonlinear dynamical model of brain states is viewed as an autopoietic, autorhoetic, self-organizing, self-tuning eruption under multiple constraints and guided by an overarching optimization principle which insures conservation of invariances and enhancement of symmetries. The nonlinear dynamical brain as developed shows quantum nonlocality, undergoes chaotic regimes, and does not compute. Heidegger and Derrida are appropriated as dynamical theorists who are concerned respectively with the movement of time and being ("Ereignis") and text ("Differance"). The chasm between postmodern thought and the thoroughly metaphysical theory that the brain computes is breached, once the nonlinear dynamical framework is adopted. The book is written in a postmodern style, making playful, opportunistic use of marginalia and dreams, and presenting a nonserial surface of broken complexity. (Series A)

Part flight of fancy, part Star Trek set, part seemingly drug-induced delusion, Globus Cassus is a solution to a world that remains the same size while housing an ever-increasing global population. The catalyst for the project as described by its creator, artist Christian Walsvogel: "The rapidly increasing population notice that their planet will soon be too small. The Earth is dismantled to provide building material. This is taken away to create Globus Cassus, a new, much bigger habitat, thought out from scratch." And so begins the story of converting the Earth into a gigantic hollow structure. The project, precisely worked out and described in detail, breaks through the bounds of architecture to continue the story of our great contemporary Utopias. Globus Cassus is the core of the Swiss contribution to the 9th Architecture Biennale in Venice and this book examines the novel project through a series of drawings, diagrams, and photographs of three-dimensional models. In the first section of this encyclopedic volume, Dr. Robert Kellner surveys the biological, psychological, and psychiatric studies on nine psychosomatic syndromes, draws conclusions about the complex etiology of these syndromes, offers guidelines for diagnosis, and recommends treatments based on research findings. The second section is an overview of the various processes that lead to bodily complaints, including somatization. The author discusses how psychosomatic syndromes described in the first section contribute to the symptoms of somatoform disorders and how knowledge gained from research on treatment of psychosomatic syndromes can be applied to the treatment of somatoform disorders.

Welcome to the proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Algorithms and Architectures for Parallel Processing (ICA3PP 2008). ICA3PP 2008 consist of two keynote addresses, seven technical sessions, and one tutorial. Included in these proceedings are papers whose authors are from Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Cyprus, France, India, Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Germany, Greece, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Tunisia, UAE, UK, and USA. Each paper was rigorously reviewed by at least three Program Committee members and/or external revi- ers, and the acceptance ratio is 35%. These papers were presented over seven technical sessions. Based on the paper review results, three papers were selected as the best papers. We would like to thank the many people who helped make this conference a successful event. We thank all authors who submitted their work to ICA3PP 2008, and all Program Committee members and additional reviewers for their diligent work in the paper review process ensuring a collection of high-quality papers. We are grateful to Hong Shen University of Adelaide, Australia and Kleanthis Psarris University of Texas at San Antonio, United States, for their willingness to be the keynote speakers. Our thanks go to Hai Jin and George Papapodoulos, the conference General Co-chairs, and Andrzej Goscinski, W- lei Zhou and Yi Pan, the conference Steering Committee Co-chairs for help in many aspects of organizing this conference. Finally, we thank all the conference participants for traveling to Cyprus.
