This book provides a unique and comprehensive guide to Spain's political and economic institutions. The authors show how these have evolved over the last decade to reflect the increasing regionalisation of public life and genuine integration of the country into European Union institutions. Informed comment at the end of each chapter balances detailed descriptions of the institutions concerned, and careful cross-referencing ensures an understanding of the key links between organisations. This is an expanded, revised and fully-updated edition of the authors' book Spain: a Guide to Political and Economic Institutions, first published in 1987

This book provides a critical introduction to the principles and institutions that make up the Spanish Constitution, which was enacted in 1978. It first explains the process of transition from Franco's dictatorship to democracy, in order to understand the historical circumstances under which the Constitution was framed. After offering a theory to justify the authority of the Constitution over ordinary laws, the book proceeds to explain the basic principles of the Spanish political regime, as well as the structure of its complex legal system. Later chapters focus on various institutions, such as the Crown, Parliament and the Government. A specific chapter is devoted to the territorial distribution of power between the State, the regions and local government. The last two chapters deal with the constitutional role of courts, and the protection of fundamental rights. The book includes some reflections on the challenges that lie ahead and the constitutional reforms that may need to be considered in the future.

The Basques, the Catalans and Spain

Daniele Conversi's book is a comprehensive introduction to Basque and Catalan nationalism. The two movements have much in common but have differed in the strategies adopted to further their cause. Basque nationalism, in the shape of the military wing of ETA, took the path of violence, spawning an efficient terrorist campaign. Catalan nationalism, by contrast, is generally more accommodating and peaceful. Daniele Conversi examines and compares the history, motives and methods of these movements, considering the influence of such intertwined aspects of nationalist mobilisation as the choice of language, race and descent as core values; the consequences of large-scale immigration; and the causes and effects of political violence.
