Why do we find it hard to explain what happens when words are set to music? This study looks at the kind of language we use to describe word/music relations, both in the academic literature and in manuals for singers or programme notes prepared by professional musicians. Helen Abbott's critique of word/music relations interrogates overlaps emerging from a range of academic disciplines including translation theory, adaptation theory, word/music theory, as well as critical musicology, metricometrie, and cognitive neuroscience. It also draws on other resources-whether adhesion science or financial modelling-to inform a new approach to analysing song in a model proposed here as the assemblage model. The assemblage model has two key stages of analysis. The first stage examines the bonds formed between the multiple layers that make up a song setting (including metre/prosody, form/structure, sound repetition, semantics, and live performance options). The second stage considers the overall outcome of each song in terms of the intensity or stability of the words and music present in a song (accretion/dilution). Taking the work of the major nineteenth-century French poet Charles Baudelaire (1821-67) as its main impetus, the volume examines how Baudelaire's poetry has inspired composers of all genres across the globe, from the 1860s to the present day. The case studies focus on Baudelaire song sets by European composers between 1880 and 1930, specifically Maurice Rollinat, Gustave Charpentier, Alexander Gretchaninov, Louis Vierne, and Alban Berg. Using this corpus, it tests out the assemblage model to uncover what happens to Baudelaire's poetry when it is set to music. It factors in the realities of song as a live performance genre, and reveals which parameters of song emerge as standard for French text-setting, and where composers diverge in their approach.

W HAT I H A V E attempted in this book is a survey of song; the kind of song which one finds variously described as 'concert', 'art', or sometimes even 'classical song'. 'Concert song' seems the most useful, certainly the least inexact or misleading, of some descriptions, especially since 'art song' sounds primly off putting, and 'classical song' really ought to be used only to refer to songs written during the classical period, i. e. the 18th century. Concert song clearly means the kind of songs one hears sung at concerts or recitals. Addressing myself to the general music-lover who, though he possesses no special knowledge of the song literature, is never theless interested enough in songs and their singers to attend recitals of Lieder or of songs in various languages, I have naturally confined myself to that period of time in which the vast majority of these songs was composed, though not necessarily only to those composers whose songs have survived to be remembered in recital programmes today. I suppose this to be roughly the three centuries covered by the years 1650-1950, though most of the songs we, as audiences, know and love were composed in the middle of this period, in other words in the 19th century.

This book constructs a new approach to the interdisciplinary study of music and poetry by examining a series of encounters between Mallarme and Debussy. It challenges the easy metaphorical impressionism that has dominated much of the scholarly literature to date. It seeks to express in a set of analytical terms both the coherence and the affront to coherence that are fundamental to our inter-art experience. In a fresh reading of the famous lecture La Musique et les Lettres, ElizabethMcCombie argues that Mallarme's poetic theory creates an architecture for the cohabitation of music and letters. She proposes his ornamental figures of arabesque and thyrsus as performative structural motifs through which the musico-poetic aesthetic is enacted in his text. Using this interpretation of Mallarme's vision, McCombie places works by both artists alongside one another as case studies. Each becomes a filter for the other to reveal an intermediary ground defined by the specific and precise analyses of both arts. The studies develop more conceptual motifs, either from external models or from transferable elements in the Mallarmean text. The new terminology (arabesque, eclat, enroulement, eventail, explosante fixe, Mobius strip, pli, and thyrsus) foregrounds rhythmic relations of time and space; it generates, in the author's words, a poetics of hesitation. McCombie offers a model for rereading Mallarme's notoriously elusive late verse and prose and for reassessingviews commonly held about the work of both artists. But the potential of this relational discourse for literary and musical study reaches beyond Mallarme and Debussy. The apparatus of figures derived here provides a powerful tool of inter-art investigation, a necessary supplement to the individual criticisms of music and poetry, and a new critical vocabulary for illuminating modernism.
