Adult ADHD: Diagnostic Assessment and Treatment, Third Edition covers not only diagnostic assessment, but also comorbidity patterns as well as differential diagnosis of ADHD with for example bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder. The symptom overlap and misdiagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome in girls and women with the inattentive subtype of ADHD, ADD is explored. The chronic delayed sleep phase syndrome associated with ADHD based on disturbances in the circadian rhythm, and the possible consequences for general health (obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer) are discussed. There are sections on ADHD and intelligence, criminality, sexuality, dyslexia and autism. Adult ADHD can be treated effectively but as yet the disorder is not always recognised by professionals and this book aims to help correct this. Diagnostic tools are included, such as the structured Diagnostic Interview for Adult ADHD (DIVA), and an ultra-short and somewhat longer screening tool, all based on the DSM-IV criteria for ADHD. Treatment options cover psychoeducation and motivation and individual and group coaching; long-acting stimulants and other new drugs for treating ADHD; use of melatonin to treat the delayed sleep-phase disorder. Useful information is included on the setting up and organisation of a department for adult ADHD with a multidisciplinary team. References, websites and useful international addresses have all been updated. Adult ADHD: Diagnostic Assessment and Treatment, Third Edition is intended for students, junior doctors/residents, psychologists, psychiatrists, other mental healthcare professionals and interested parties and provides a quick overview of the current state of the science and of the methods used in diagnosis and treatment. Adult ADHD: Diagnostic Assessment and Treatment, Third Edition was originally published by Pearson Assessment and Information BV, The Netherlands.

A picture is worth a thousand lies in this psychological thriller by bestselling author David Levithan (Every Day; Will Grayson, Will Grayson with John Green). In this high school-set psychological tale, a tormented teen named Evan starts to discover a series of unnerving photographs—some of which feature him. Someone is stalking him . . . messing with him . . . threatening him. Worse, ever since his best friend Ariel has been gone, he's been unable to sleep, spending night after night torturing himself for his role in her absence. And as crazy as it sounds, Evan's starting to believe it's Ariel that's behind all of this, punishing him. But the more Evan starts to unravel the mystery, the more his paranoia and insomnia amplify, and the more he starts to unravel himself. Creatively told with black-and-white photos interspersed between the text so the reader can see the photos that are so unnerving to Evan, Every You, Every Me is a one-of-a-kind departure from a one-of-a-kind author. From the Hardcover edition.

The articles in this edited volume analyse current conflicts, asymmetries of power and (contested) identities in today's postcolonial Southeast Asia. The special qualifications of Social Anthropology - such as detailed empirical studies and its long tradition of research on ethnicity/identity - are particularly valuable when considering those parts of Southeast Asia, especially peripheral regions and border zones, that are afflicted by violent conflicts. Such hostilities, which in the case of Indonesia reached their peak shortly before and during the years just following the forced resignation of President Suharto in 1998, have been accompanied by an aggressive (re)emergence of ethnic and religious identities. While a number of articles in this volume focus on these recent conflicts, others concentrate on Southeast Asian concepts of power in general. They do not only examine symbolic constructions of domination but also ask how concepts of power are enacted, used and undermined in everyday life, especially within gender relations. The articles dealing with Southeast Asian identity constructions also focus on the topic of power asymmetries. They encounter phenomena of increasingly hardened religious and ethnic identities resulting in rigid social boundaries and conflicts between different groups. Yet they also point to cosmopolitan options and strategies conforming to local conditions.

Fifteen years ago, psychologist and educator Howard Gardner introduced the idea of multiple intelligences, challenging the presumption that intelligence consists of verbal or analytic abilities only--those intelligences that schools tend to measure. He argued for a broader understanding of the intelligent mind, one that embraces creation in the arts and music, spatial reasoning, and the ability to understand ourselves and others.Today, Gardner’s ideas have become widely accepted--indeed, they have changed how we think about intelligence, genius, creativity, and even leadership, and he is widely regarded as one of the most important voices writing on these subjects. Now, in Extraordinary Minds, a book as riveting as it is new, Gardner poses an important question: Is there a set of traits shared by all truly great achievers--those we deem extraordinary--no matter their field or the time period within which they did their important work?In an attempt to answer this question, Gardner first examines how most of us mature into more or less competent adults. He then examines closely four persons who lived unquestionably extraordinary lives--Mozart, Freud, Woolf, and Gandhi--using each as an exemplar of a different kind of extraordinariness: Mozart as the master of a discipline, Freud as the innovative founder of a new discipline, Woolf as the great introspector, and Gandhi as the influencer. What can we learn about ourselves from the experiences of the extraordinary? Interestingly, Gardner finds that an excess of raw power is not the most impressive characteristic shared by superachievers; rather, these extraordinary individuals all have had a special talent for identifying their own strengths and weaknesses, for accurately analyzing the events of their own lives, and for converting into future successes those inevitable setbacks that mark every life.Gardner provides answers to a number of provocative questions, among them: How do we explain extraordinary times--Athens in the fifth century B.C., the T’ang Dynasty in the eighth century, Islamic Society in the late Middle Ages, and New York at the middle of the century? What is the relation among genius, creativity, fame, success, and moral extraordinariness? Does extraordinariness make for a happier, more fulfilling life, or does it simply create a special onus?

This book addresses the practice of social innovation, which is currently very much in the public eye. New ideas and approaches are needed to tackle the severe and wicked problems with which contemporary societies are struggling. Especially in times of economic crisis, social innovation is regarded as one of the crucial elements needed to move forward. Our knowledge of its dynamics has significantly progressed, thanks to an abundance of studies on social innovation both general and sector-specific. However, despite the valuable research conducted over the past years, the systematic analysis of social innovation is still contested and incomplete. The questions asked in the book will be the following: 1. What is the nature of social innovations? 2.What patterns can be identified in social innovations emerging at the local level? 3.How is the emergence and spread of social innovations related to urban governance? More precisely, which conditions and arrangements facilitate and hinders social innovation? We explore these questions using different types of data and methods, and studying different contexts. In particular, we focus on innovations that aim at solving problems of the young unemployed, single parents and migrants. This analysis is based on original research carried out in the period 2010-2013 in the framework of a European project with a specific empirical research strategy. Research was carried out in 20 cities in 10 different European countries.
